No less than six volleyball world champions will play on 23 November in Gdynia Arena. The match at the top of the PlusLeague will take place in our venue, with sensational Lotos Trefl Gdansk vying with Asseco Resovia Rzeszow.
Lotos Trefl began the 2014/2015 season with eight, and Asseco Resovia with nine consecutive wins; now both teams head the league table, along with PGE Skra Belchatow. In the case of the team from Rzeszow this is not surprising – there are several world champions playing in Asseco Resovia (Rafał Buszek, Fabian Drzyzga, Krzysztof Ignaczak, Dawid Konarski and Piotr Nowakowski), and their team-mates also enjoy a star status in their respective national teams. But on the other hand Lotos Trefl is an absolute sensation this season and couch Andrea Anastasi has built up an excellent team in Gdansk. Its leaders are Mateusz Mika, one of the best receivers of the recent World Championship in Poland, and libero Piotr Gacek, the 2006 World Championship runner-up and 2009 European champion.
In GDYNIA ARENA we already welcomed great volleyball at the national team level a few times. In 2009 a qualifying tournament for the World Championship took place in our venue, with teams from Poland and France, among other countries, participating. And those two teams clashed a month later in the European Championship final. In 2010 the Polish women’s volleyball team defeated national teams from the Dominican Republic, Germany and the United States in the World Grand Prix tournament. Finally, in 2013 the best young men’s players vied for medals in the U20 European Volleyball Championship and later the teams representing Russia, Bulgaria, Germany, and the Czech Republic competed in Gdynia in the “adult” European Championship.
So now is the time for the best available club volleyball! Can Andrea Anastasi and his players work out a winning formula against the constellation from Rzeszow? And which team – Lotos Trefl or Asseco Resovia – will leave Gdynia unbeaten? On 23 November we will receive answers to these questions. The game starts at 18:00.
